Whether it’s the crazy tight three part harmony, the killer backup playing, the stories, the passion or the compassion, it gets your attention. The love of the sound that three female voices make together is at the center of this group. The chord rules the day. Both mystical and elemental when the three hit “it” the hair on the back of your neck’s gonna stand up.
I apologise if advertising here causes offence but I am hoping that
the subject of this podcast will be of sufficient interest to the
subscribers to this list to warrant inclusion.

I produce the Celtic Myth Podshow (http://celticmythpodshow.com ) which
is a free MP3 download and aims to tell the stories of Celtic
mythology to its listeners. We have started with the Irish
Mythological Cycle and the arrival of the Tuatha De Danaan(the faerie race) in Erin
We aim to cover all of the Six Nations in the series.

The by-line of the show is "Bringing the Tales and Stories of
the Ancient Celts to your Fireside" which is the atmosphere we would
like to create. The old legends were recounted orally and only written
down in later years, so by hearing them told we are getting a step
closer to their original presentation and hopeful, meaning. That's
the theory anyway :)
Our website also includes Maps of Ireland
with the places mentioned in the stories marked. Many of these places are
still exist and are spiritual centres to many people
You can find these maps in the resources section of the website.

You can find us on itunes or download/listen to the episodes on the website

I hope this is of interest to some
When - To be determined. Micah and I are discussing his calender and if necessary we will decide when is most convenient for him. That said we would like as much input as we can get from those who are interested as to best times for most people. Right now it comes down to one Thursday evening per month or a Saturday or Sunday afternoon per month. At the moment the Black Spot is not open on Sundays but if there is enough interest Micah will open for events.

I have high hopes for this as an old timer who would love to see the maritime tradition of the Cape be better preserved. Any one on who has ideas, suggestions, or comments please post here. I will also be posting information on the related Tribe groups and Myspace forums I know as well as making individual contacts.

Let me start this request by saying that I am currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Folklore at Memorial University, Newfoundland. As part of a central assignment for a class on Folklore Genres, I am studying the subject of beliefs, taboos, and warnings related to male masturbation and auto-genital-touching behaviors. Since the study of folklore relies on the oral transmission of knowledge from one individual to others, I am reaching out to the men I know in an effort to discuss this subject with them. Anything you can tell me regarding your experiences with the subject-matter would be greatly beneficial to my project. The contents of your replies will be treated as anonymous for the purpose of writing the paper, unless you specifically say otherwise—so your privacy is assured.

My central question for the men reading this message is: What beliefs, taboos, or warnings regarding male masturbation and/or auto-genital-touching (vernacular: “playing with yourself”) have you heard, and at what point in your life did these ideas become familiar to you?

Just to give you some examples, I’ve paraphrased some answers I’ve received here:
--When I was very young, perhaps 4 or 5, I heard that if a boy pulled on his penis too much, it would break off his body.
--When I was in junior high school I heard that frequent masturbation could lead to hairy palms and blindness, but this warning wasn’t treated as serious by the people who told it too me. These people, boys I knew in school, said it like was something people in the “old days” used to take seriously.
--When I was in high school I heard the rumor that if a man masturbated too many times in a row, the internal workings of his testicles might be damaged. The rumor also said that the evidence of the damage would be having an orgasm but not ejaculating and/or having an orgasm, but blood would come out of the penis instead of semen.
--Around the same time, in high school, I started to hear rumors that frequent masturbation could lead to perversion and insanity.

Cheers,

Stephen

p.s. Even if your answers are identical to the examples, I still want to hear your take on these experiences because, in the study of folklore, it is a very meaningful when people tell the same stories in different ways.

In Harmony's Way

In the spring of 2005, eighteen Bay Area singers got together to record
some of their favorite chorus songs from the American and British Isles
traditions in a CD collection called "In Harmony's Way." The project
sought to document the rich local heritage of a-cappella singing, and to
share these wonderful songs with a greater audience. The rehearsal,
recording process, and concert were filmed for a documentary by El Mundo
Bueno studios.

Pete Seeger gave the concept a hearty endorsement, and the group did its
debut concert at Berkeley's Freight and Salvage, in July. Locals Dick
Holdstock and Allan Macleod, early Palms organizers and singers of
traditional English and Scottish songs, are part of the group, and will
serve as Masters of Ceremony for this performance.

In Harmony's Way is comprised both of well known singers with multiple
recording projects to their credit, such as Shay Black of the famous
"Black Family of Dublin", Sylvia Herold of "Awake the Dead", Doug Olsen
of "Oak Ash and Thorn", and others who love the music. Each member is a
long-term participant in the Bay Area song session scene. In its
performances the group seeks to recreate the atmosphere and energy of
the informal song sessions that have been an integral part of folk music
for over a century.
Hailed as one of the finest Celtic groups in the Northwest, Olympia, Washington's Fiddlehead plays an exciting blend of Celtic music and song. The band features Anthea Lawrence on fiddle and vocals, Audra Poor on Uillean pipes, flute, and whistle, and Lawson Dumbeck on guitar, banjo, and bodhran. The distant drone of pipes, sweet ballads sung in Gaelic, upbeat jigs, melodic airs twining between guitar and flute, fiery reels driven by the fiddle; all this is part of a Fiddlehead performance.

THE SUGAR BEETS
Playing their own style of high-energy acoustic music, the Eugene, Oregon's Sugar Beets are unlike any contemporary band on the scene today. Defined by impeccable musicianship, multiple singers and songwriters, and unbeatable live performances, their music draws from the foot-stomping traditions of bluegrass and Celtic music, mixed with contemporary and pop sounds. This year at Faerieworlds they will present a never-before-seen Faerie themed set.

TRANCE ZEN DANCE
Trance Zen Dance is a collective of performance artists, poets, and cybernauts, coming together to celebrate and share their gifts and intentions through live performance. Featuring highly-acclaimed world-music vocalist Kimberly Bass, California based Trance Zen Dance weaves realms of acoustic music and electronica to create energized live performances, while bridging worlds between the future and the past.

LORANES WELL
Featuring Kathryn Claire and Matthew Hayward-McDonald of Toad in the Hole, Loranes Well is a rich blend of original and traditional music inspired by the Celtic and old world sounds. The groups powerful harmony vocals, matched with Karthryn Claire's precision fiddling makes Lorane's Well one of the pacific northwest outstanding new Celtic acts.

PHOENIX RISING
Phoenix Rising is a performing arts troupe which originated in Santa Cruz, CA that specializes in fire dance theatre, stilting, costume design and wearable art.
Sacred theater, personal expression, and a unique blend of traditional dance and spontaneous movement are combined to tell stories of passion, creation, love, and mischief.

Phoenix Rising paints a colorful, exciting landscape that allows imagination to carry the audience beyond their day to day reality.

THE MUDFAERIE EXPERIENCE
Amira the MudFaerie is a one-of-a-kind, organic performance artist that touches and entertains people of all ages. The MudFaerie blends music and art in a completely unique manner. Amira turns a pile of mud into a sculpted world of fantastical beings before the eyes of observers.

TOBY FROUD
Born in London, England, Toby Froud began his acting career before he could speak. Starring in his first motion picture when he was still a toddler, he played Sarah's baby brother "Toby" in the Jim Henson film Labyrinth.

Recently, Toby has been working as a stilt-walker and dancing bear with a troupe that performed throughout England this summer. Wendy made his incredible costumes and Toby has become a master stilt walker. Toby is also very interested in film making and is working on a short film featuring puppets he has made himself.

JOSHUA SAFFORD
Joshua Safford appears in two forms Raven and Jeremiah Wiggins. Raven is a magical bird that does an act that is a curious combination of balance, eggstraordinary magic and lunacy. Jeremiah Wiggins is the ambassador to the faerie realm, as well as a professional storyteller that has toured nationally for over a decade doing environmental theater, and has been part of the Faerieworlds Festival from the very beginning. His tales are a wonderful cross between humor and fantasy and are sometimes blended with magic. Jeremiah Wiggins is also the human “translator”(I.E. creator) of the faeries’ newspaper, the Daily Crock.. (What pixies read with their morning coffee.) Jeremiah is not hard to spot, just look for the large faerie mushroom perched on top of his head. He’ll plop it down and spin you a yarn. For more information on Joshua, his characters, and strange fantasy products, check out his website at www.ravenstory.com/new

SHADOW CIRCUS PUPPETRY THEATRE
Combining folklore, mythology, Lovecraftian monsters and pop-culture parody, Shadow Circus Creature Theatre has been one of San Francisco's most popular and outrageous puppetry troupes since it's formation in 2000. Using life-sized latex and foam creatures by puppetmaker Dave Haaz-Baroque, Shadow Circus creates a world that is utterly fantastic, and yet hilariously similar to our own.

"Haaz-Baroque's characters have much more depth than [Peter] Jackson's could have ever hoped to have achieved." -Silke Tudor, SF Weekly
