Has anybody noticed that Toyota is using "What Shall We Do with a Drunken Sailor?" as the music in a commercial these days?

Someone pointed that out in one of the Faire folk tribes. (Well, at *least* one of them. I haven't checked them all... ) I saw the commercial right after I read the thread. :P

Ah. I'm not a Faire follower. I tend more toward 18th- and 19th-century music...

No wonder it took so long for me to get a response. Talking about it is old hat for some of you.

Oh I noticed it and had to laugh. Interesting arrangement to say the least. I only heard the one on the radio.

Yeah. In typical pop form they had to end it with a major chord, because of course minor chords are always sad, and you don't want to risk making anybody sad if you're trying to sell something. Never mind the fact that for millenia minor modes have been perfectly acceptable, if not prominent, in many cultures' repertoires...

Hell, never mind that you're using a song about drunkenness to sell a car...

"Give him the keys to a new Toyota,
Give him the keys to a new Toyota,
Give him the keys to a new Toyota
          Earlye in the morning!"
