In Harmony's Way
In the spring of 2005, eighteen Bay Area singers got together to record
some of their favorite chorus songs from the American and British Isles
traditions in a CD collection called "In Harmony's Way." The project
sought to document the rich local heritage of a-cappella singing, and to
share these wonderful songs with a greater audience. The rehearsal,
recording process, and concert were filmed for a documentary by El Mundo
Bueno studios.
Pete Seeger gave the concept a hearty endorsement, and the group did its
debut concert at Berkeley's Freight and Salvage, in July. Locals Dick
Holdstock and Allan Macleod, early Palms organizers and singers of
traditional English and Scottish songs, are part of the group, and will
serve as Masters of Ceremony for this performance.
In Harmony's Way is comprised both of well known singers with multiple
recording projects to their credit, such as Shay Black of the famous
"Black Family of Dublin", Sylvia Herold of "Awake the Dead", Doug Olsen
of "Oak Ash and Thorn", and others who love the music. Each member is a
long-term participant in the Bay Area song session scene. In its
performances the group seeks to recreate the atmosphere and energy of
the informal song sessions that have been an integral part of folk music
for over a century.
